Oceanfront Locations: Beaches and Piers
1. Scripps Pier and La Jolla Shores Beach
This is one of my favorite spots for all types of photoshoots, from mini sessions to full-length shoots. It offers a range of scenic backdrops, including shaded portraits under trees on the lawn. Toward sunset, we can head down to the beach by the pier and the nearby cliffs.
Note: Be mindful of the tides to ensure we can access both the pier and the cliffs.

2. Windansea Beach
Another beach in the La Jolla area, Windansea is known for its rocky landscape, sandy beach areas, and small grottoes during low tide. Checking the tides here is essential, as high tide can submerge the entire beach. I recommend scheduling sessions closer to sunset since there’s no natural shade. We can start with photos on the nearby streets lined with classic California palm trees, then move down to the beach.
Important: Be sure to check the tides, as the beach can be submerged at high tide. Use caution on the rocks, as they can be slippery.
3. Del Mar Beach and Seagrove Park
In addition to the beach and small park, this location features a railroad running through it. I recommend scheduling photoshoots closer to sunset and avoiding the summer tourist season, as it can get quite crowded.
Note: Don’t forget to check the tides

4. Coronado Beach
Known for its wide sandy shoreline and iconic Hotel del Coronado, this beach offers a stunning backdrop for any photoshoot. With its golden sand, clear water, and beautiful views, it’s perfect for both relaxed and elegant sessions. I prefer to photograph here in the winter when there are fewer tourists, especially during sunset. Additionally, the far end of the beach has a designated dog beach, making it a great spot for pet-friendly photos.
Note: The beach is so wide and sandy here that tides aren’t a concern (as far as I remember).

5. Ocean Beach and Pier
Ocean Beach is a lively spot with a long pier, vibrant surf culture, and unique character. The pier offers sweeping ocean views, perfect for dynamic, coastal-inspired photos. I recommend shooting at sunset or early on weekday mornings to avoid the crowds. Nearby, you'll find palm-lined streets and vibrant street art, adding extra backdrops for photos. There’s also a designated dog beach.
Note: Unfortunately, the pier is currently closed for repairs.

6. Oceanside Beach and Pier
Oceanside Beach is a popular destination known for its picturesque pier and relaxed atmosphere. The long pier offers stunning ocean views and is a great spot for capturing both the pier itself and the surrounding coastal scenery. The beach has wide sandy stretches, perfect for a variety of photoshoots, whether you’re looking for beachy vibes or more scenic shots. I recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset for the best lighting and a quieter experience, as it can get busy during peak hours. The area also offers charming nearby streets with a mix of coastal architecture and local shops. Plus, just a short distance away is the iconic Top Gun house, a must-see for fans of the film.
Note: If you're looking to take photos under the pier, be sure to check the tides, as it’s not possible at high tide. Also, the farthest end of the pier recently burned down, but in my opinion, the view is still not affected.
Parks
1. Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a cultural gem in San Diego, offering a stunning mix of gardens, historic buildings, and beautiful open spaces. Known for its Spanish Revival architecture, it’s the perfect location for diverse photoshoots, whether you're capturing portraits, family photos, or more formal sessions. Since Balboa Park is quite large, the lighting is excellent almost any time of day, but the best light is, of course, at sunset. If we’re planning a mini photoshoot, I’ll highlight more specific locations in the park below.
Note: It can get crowded in the summer, and it's important to check if there are any events taking place in the park.

1. 1 Balboa Park: Rose and Cactus Gardens
The Rose Garden and Cactus Garden in Balboa Park are two of the most picturesque and vibrant spots within the park. The Rose Garden features beautifully manicured flower beds, with a variety of roses in full bloom, making it a perfect location for romantic and nature-inspired photoshoots. Just a short walk away, the Cactus Garden offers a more desert-like aesthetic, with its unique cactus varieties and striking landscape. Both gardens provide plenty of natural beauty and excellent lighting, especially during the golden hours of the morning and sunset.
Note: The Cactus Garden is beautiful year-round, while the Rose Garden blooms multiple times a year. However, I recommend checking recent social media posts to see if the roses are currently in bloom.

1. 2 Balboa Park: Plaza de Panama, El Prado and Botanical Building
The view from the Botanical Building is a signature landmark of the park and one of the most popular spots for photoshoots. Although it can get crowded, it’s still a stunning and beautiful location. The galleries along El Prado are perfect for photos at any time of the day, as they provide plenty of shade.
Note: Around February, the ornamental apple or pear trees in Plaza de Panama bloom, adding extra beauty to the area. Plaza de Panama is the busiest part of the park, so it can get crowded.
